KIDS KITESURFING
We structure our kids kitesurfing lessons differently to adult lessons. Kids learn faster, have shorter attention spans and, most importantly, they need more personal attention to ensure their safety.
The Graykite Bermuda team has been teaching the young and young at heart to kitesurf for over 25 years. This wealth of experience has informed our unique approach to kitesurfing lessons for kids between the ages of 6 and 12.
What’s different abut teaching kids to kitesurf?
Children are impressionable, adaptable and tend to progress quickly. This is largely due to their sense of adventure, highly adaptable motor skills and lust for fun.
Most children decide after their first lesson whether kite surfing is for them. This is why our kids kitesurfing lessons are designed to let them experience what it’s all about.
Kid’s lessons are shorter than the adult lessons, usually 2 hours. This means the children remain captivated throughout the lesson. We don’t want to burn them out mentally or physically. Safety is our top priority when planning kids kitesurfing lessons.
Why choose Bermuda?
The wide open spaces of Bermuda provide the perfect location for kids to learn kitesurfing.
The more sheltered spot of Somerset Long Bay provides a wonderful alternative to Elbow Beach if the wind is too strong or the waves to big.
All in all, you’d be hard pressed to find a better place for your kids to learn to kitesurf.
How old do you need to be to learn to kitesurf?
Kids should usually be at least 6 years old when they take their first lesson and we put in placemany extra safety measures when teaching youngsters. We use a retractable leash throughout their kite and board training which ensures your children are always physically attached to an experienced instructor.
As our young students progress they will be offered more independence, but only when both instructor and youngster are both fully confident they are safe. Graykite’s teaching methodology focuses on positive affirmation in a safe and secure learning environment. This allows youngsters to excel and share our passion for kitesurfing.
Group size
To maximise safety and progress children always learn in a private or semi private lessons. This ensures they get the direct supervision they need. The only other thing they really need is the desire to learn and passion to have fun. Well, that and expert tuition!
High adrenaline fun in a super-safe environment makes learning to kitesurf the experience of a lifetime for many children. Hopefully that’s what they’ll tell you and all their friends back at school!
Do we need to do any preparation?
Kitesurfing combines two dimensions: kite and board. Many kids already have some experience that works to their advantage. This can include sports like skateboarding, snowboarding or small kite flying. Also, any activities that help build balance and co-ordination will help them to master the kite and board – for instance, ballet, football or gymnastics. But there’s nothing specific you or they need to do to prepare.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum age for kids kitesurfing lessons?
We generally welcome children from 6 years of age and older, depending on their confidence in the water, maturity level, physical size, and overall comfort around ocean activities. Every child is different, and we are happy to discuss suitability prior to booking.
Is kitesurfing safe for children?
Safety is our highest priority. All children's lessons are conducted using age-appropriate teaching methods, equipment, and progression plans. We maintain additional safety protocols for younger students and only teach in carefully selected conditions suitable for learning.
How many children are taught at one time?
To ensure the highest level of safety, supervision, and individual attention, we never teach more than two children at a time. Most sessions are conducted privately or semi-privately, allowing our instructors to focus closely on each child's safety, confidence, and progression.
Does my child need any previous experience?
No previous experience is required. Our lessons are specifically designed for beginners and focus on building confidence, water awareness, kite control, and safety skills in a fun, supportive, and encouraging environment.
How do children learn during lessons?
Every child learns differently. Some children learn best by watching, others by listening, and many by simply getting hands-on experience and learning through doing. Our instructors adapt their coaching style to each child's individual learning preferences, helping create a positive, enjoyable, and effective learning experience.
What safety equipment is provided?
We provide all necessary kitesurfing equipment, including helmets, flotation devices, impact protection where appropriate, and modern beginner-friendly equipment designed to maximize both safety and progression.
What should my child bring?
We recommend bringing:
- Swimsuit or rash guard
- Towel
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Water bottle
- Change of clothes
- Sunglasses with retention strap optional
- Any personal medications if required
Can parents watch the lesson?
Absolutely. Parents are welcome to observe from the beach and follow their child's progression throughout the lesson. We believe communication and parental involvement are an important part of creating a positive learning experience.
What happens if conditions are unsuitable?
Safety always comes first. If wind, weather, or ocean conditions are not suitable for children's instruction, lessons will be rescheduled to another available date or time. We never compromise safety in order to proceed with a lesson.
How quickly do children learn?
Every child progresses at their own pace. Some children develop confidence and kite control very quickly, while others benefit from a slower progression. Our focus is always on building strong foundations, confidence, and safety awareness before advancing to more technical skills.
Do you offer private lessons?
Yes. Private instruction is our most popular option for younger students as it allows for individualized coaching, maximum supervision, and a learning pace tailored specifically to each child.
Are lessons suitable for nervous children?
Yes. Many children join us with little or no previous watersports experience. Our instructors are experienced in working with young students and focus on creating a calm, confidence-building environment where children feel comfortable, supported, and encouraged throughout the learning process.
Can lessons be combined with a family experience?
Absolutely. Many families choose to combine children's kitesurfing lessons with private family sessions, paddle experiences, or other curated Graykite ocean activities to create a memorable Bermuda experience together.
